Sometimes, horseracing is a big bummer!
That is the case today, when, after a stellar workout at Aqueduct Racetrack in NY, it was found that Big Brown injured his right front foot. Apparently he actually tore off a chunk of his foot.
Say it with me now: Not good.
Obviously unable to race without a load of time off, he has been RETIRED.
That efficiently disposes of the big matchup between him and Curlin in the Breeders' Cup Classic on October 25th that everyone was so anxiously awaiting.
To say the racing world is 'bummed out' would be an understatement.
Thankfully though, it is not a life-threatening injury and he will go on to live a full and productive life as a pampered stud at the amazing Three Chimneys Farm in Lexington, KY.
Big Brown retires with 7 wins out of 8 starts and earnings of $3,614,500. He will best be remembered for his thrilling run in the Triple Crown races this spring, and for his disappointing Belmont Stakes debacle. Thanks for the excitement and fun this spring, big guy!
In contrast, Casino Drive raced in an allowance race yesterday at Santa Anita (home of this year's Breeders' Cup) and trounced the much less-worthy field.
His connections state it was the "perfect prep race" prior to the BC Classic, and he is sitting on top of a big race - that's horse-talk for he's gonna race a big one next time out.

Casino Drive (s.-Mineshaft) is from Japan, but bears truly American bloodlines- he is half brother to the '06 & '07 Belmont Stakes winners (Rags to Riches and Jazil) and also- because I always follow bloodlines- that means he is a great-grandson of Seattle Slew. That appeals to me, big time.
If it weren't for Curlin, I'd say I hoped Casino Drive wins the Classic for that reason.
But there IS a horse named Curlin.
So anyway, I guess we'll see a classic match up on October 25 - they just won't be serving any Brownies.
