Derby 135: Super shocker in the slop!

Mine That Bird says:

Na na na na nah!
Fooled ya, didn't I?

Yes, it's true. A 50-1 longshot (very long!) has won the 135th Kentucky Derby today at Churchill Downs.

A Canadian champion at age 2, Mine That Bird was really not given any consideration for the roses at all. That stayed the case as the day went on, his odds pretty much sticking to the 50-1 area all day long.
After the scratch of favorite I Want Revenge, the race seemed pretty wide open, and I really think the rest of the field of 19 calmed down and relaxed a bit.

The track was pretty wet, though no rain fell today - it was still fairly sloppy at post time.
The race unfolded relatively uneventfully, and when it looked like Pioneerof The Nile was poised to give Bob Baffert his fourth Derby win, jockey Calvin Borel guided his winning mount through the obstacle course of horses and flew up the rail (in similar fashion to his win on Street Sense two years ago) and left the field in his wake.
His margin of victory (nearly 7 lengths) was the biggest since Assault in 1946. Whoa.

A totally convincing win, I'm sure it had oddsmakers and racing fans alike scratching their heads thinking "Now why didn't I think of that???"

Calvin Borel, after winning the race, had a real sweet time coming back to the winner's circle, prancing the longshot winner in front of the grandstands while whooping, hooting and hollering his Cajun self the entire way over. It was hysterical, but heartwarming to see him so tickled pink.

The trainer of Mine That Bird, Bennie "Chip" Wooley Jr., hopped into the Winner's Circle on crutches, having severly broken his leg in a motorcycle accident 2 months ago. He drove the Derby winner from New Mexico to Louisville - a 21 hour trip - himself. I'm sure he may have been pumped up on drugs to get through the day, but pure excitement - and some champagne - will no doubt help him along for the rest of the weekend and the trip home.

Mine That Bird is owned by the Double Eagle Ranch of Mark Allen and Buena Suerta Equine, owned by Leonard Blach. He was originally purchased for the low low bargain price of $9500 - nearly unheard of for a quality thoroughbred, but his current owners saw something so they bought him privately for $400,000.

The winner, a gelding, was Canadian 2 year old champion last year, and had an unusual road to the Derby, by way of Canada, California, and New Mexico. He only worked once at Churchill Downs.
His breeding says he could do it, though - his daddy (Birdstone) won the 2004 Belmont Stakes (ruining Smarty Jones's Triple Crown bid) and his granddaddy (Grindstone) won the Kentucky Derby in 1996. Also of note is his dam's sire, Smart Strike, is the sire of both 2006 Derby winner Street Sense, and two time horse of the year ('07 & '08) Curlin. So the breeding is there, obviously.

I had a ticket on him to win, so I was pretty psyched to learn he went off at 50-1, which is what he was last night when I made an advance bet at the OTB. Yipee!
His victory was the second biggest payout since Donerail back in 1913. Seriously.

Placing second was the Bob Baffert trained (and Santa Anita Derby winner) Pioneerof The Nile, and Illinois Derby winnner was the show horse.

No decisions have been made yet about running the Derby winner in the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore on May 16th, but I would be fairly shocked if the connections don't go that route, and would assume it would only be injury to the horse that would keep them from Pimlico for the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

It would be a HELL of a story if this 3 year old would make that kind of history, but you just never know. Any given day.
Any given year, for that matter.

In a bit of other weekend racing news:

The owners of the ill-fated filly, Eight Belles, were on hand for the newly named Eight Belles Stakes (gr III, and formerly known as the La Troienne) a few races before the Derby. Before the race, they were presented with a plaque and literally, eight bells rang out before the race. It was rather bittersweet. The race was won by Four Gifts. Sentimental favorite Just Jenda (trained and owned by Eight Belles trainer Larry Jones) came in second, and another Jones trainee, Warrior Maid, came in third.

In the Woodford Reserve Turf (gr 1T), the sensational 7 year old Einstein (above, far left) made history when he won the renowned race for a consecutive year. It's his 5th grade one win. He's a horse that's been in my fantasy stable for several years, in fact, and I'm always rooting for him. Fantastic, impressive, stellar job!

Also earlier this week, the new statue of Barbaro was unveiled near the entrance of Gate 1 at Churchill Downs.

The owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, were of course on hand, as well as trainer Michael Matz and Barbaro's veterinarian Dr. Dean Richardson. The artist was Alexa King. It is a fitting tribute to a brilliant racehorse..

So, in all, it was an eventful weekend. With the Barbaro statue unveiling, the Kentucky Oaks freak Rachel Alexandra's 20 length win, and the eye-popping victory by Mine That Bird today.
But there's someone waiting in the wings to spoil Mine That Bird's possible Triple Crown attempt... and he's - dare I say it? - out for revenge....

I Want Revenge says pooh-pooh to the longshot Derby victor.

Guess we'll see, won't we?

*photos by Reuters, AP, and Blood Horse...

Derby Day is upon us!

It's Derby day!

And as exicted as I am for it, my spirits are dampened by a bit of a bummer.
My favorite - the morning line favorite as well - has scratched.
Yep, no ' Want Revenge'today due to some swelling and inflammation in one of his legs.

Yeah, it's good to find out before he races and injures it further, but this is a major disappointment for many people. Especially advance bettors (such as myself) who already have Revenge as part of their exactas and trifectas and the likes.

Thankfully I have already made bets on a few other horses without including Revenge, so I still have a shot.
But it's still a black fly in the chardonnay, you know?

In other racing excitement:

Rachel Alexandra put on a helluva show in the Kentucky Oaks yesterday!!

I was on my way to the OTB when the race was going off, so I had to watch it online last night when I got home.

It's been quite awhile since I have seen a race like that. I mean - she really romped. No horse even got close to her. When she flew across the finish line, I had to count to like, 5, before any other horses even showed up. I think they said she won by twenty lengths or so.
It is quite doubtful that we will see a race like this all year. Seriously.
No, I mean it.

You can check it out by clicking here, and in the article there is a VIDEO feed. It's worth a look.
It was truly an astonishing victory. Perhaps she should have raced against the boys, eh?

Hopefully her connections will think about that. She isn't nominated to the Triple Crown races (which means they'd have to pay an exorborant fee to race her in the Preakness or Belmont) so I look forward to her this summer, kicking the boys' asses somewhere!

Congrats.

So anyway....I sit and wait.. Pre-racing starts at noon, but I have a baby shower to go to, so I'll have to catch some of that online later as well.. But this afternoon, only a F5 tornado will be able to coax me away from my television, and even then I'd grab my laptop and hope the live feed still worked.

With the defection of I Want Revenge, I'm gonna go with Friesan Fire or Pioneerof The Nile as most likely to take the roses... but I'm not throwing in the towel for the horses I mentioned yesterday. Everyone has a better shot now, truth be told.

*Even Nowhere To Hide (joining at least 4 others at morning line odds of 50-1!!!)... The son of Vindication (who himself is one of Seattle Slew's final sons) just may pull off a major upset, who knows.

So: Go, Baby, Go!!!!

More later......

Oaks day!

Kentucky Oaks day is upon us.

The distaff equivalent of the Derby, the Kentucky Oaks is always held the day before the big boy's race.
The girls have been racing in this race the same amount of years as the Derby. Both started in 1875 and are the oldest continuously contested sporting event in history. Rock on.

photo: Blood-Horse

This year, the horse to beat is Rachel Alexandra. (above)
But I also like Gabby's Golden Gal.
Both of these horses are sired by Medaglia d'Oro, a fantastic horse from a few years ago.

*Moving from the Oaks to the Derby, I'm having a really tough time deciding just who I want to bet on for the big race.

My number one fave is I Want Revenge.

But also on my short list:

Chocolate Candy

Friesan Fire

Pioneerof The Nile

General Quarters

Dunkirk

I have a little twinge of maybe about Papa Clem and Advice, as well. Guess we'll see...

But if I were to choose a solid pick.... it'd be I Want Revenge (below)

Gosh I hope one of my picks wins...

Anticipation...

Well, I've done it.

I've talked the hubby into yet another trip 600 miles south to the Outer Banks!
Yes, I'm crazy, and yes, I'm psyched!!

'Cause this year will be an even more eventful trip, as we've convinced my mom to come along.
She's never been there, and to my knowledge hasn't been to the beach (only Baltimore Harbor and the likes) since I was like, 2.
If I'm wrong, she'll tell me. But I don't think so.

And if you haven't been to the Outer Banks, you haven't seen one of the most unspoiled, naturally beautiful places on earth. Granted, I'm talking about Hatteras Island... cause those of you who've been up north to Nags Head (about 45 miles up north from Avon, where we usually stay) have seen the more commercial side of the Outer Banks. Nice, but we prefer the less crowded southern beaches.

Anyway... I booked a cottage tonight and so we're off, come May 17th. Off season is the BEST time to go (provided you don't have kids in school) because again - less crowded (there have been times we've been down on the beach and there is literally no one else there. Unreal). The best part about going in May (or in the autumn, which we have done - but have also had plans cancelled due to a hurricane, so that can work against you) is you get fantastic off-season prices.

So I can say, with all certaintly, that May is such a fab month. The Kentucky Derby (2 days and counting...), the Preakness Stakes, and VACATION.
I really didn't think we'd be going again this year, but really we can't pass up the major deals. The cottages are marked down (due to the economy I suppose) even lower than usual, the gas prices are half of what they were last year at this time when we went, and we get to show my mom all the sites.
I hope she's as excited as we are. Not about the eleven hour car ride, of course...but everything else!

I know she'll get a kick out of crossing the Bonner Bridge (below) at Oregon Inlet. It connects the lower Outer Banks (Hatteras Island) to the upper part (Bodie Island).... first time I crossed it I nearly held my breath.
It's one of the most dangerous bridges in America. With good reason.

I love the way you just kind of go down the path and hello! Here's the ocean!

So much prettier than the boardwalks that are generally seen at the beach, with sand dragged in to meet the sidewalks and people towel to towel... ugh.
Natural beauty. That's the way to go.

Avon is the star on the map. It's the town the farthest out to sea. You really feel like you are in the ocean, here, folks. No doubt about it. You can feel pretty helpless when you're traveling on a two lane highway and you can see ocean to both your left and your right.

The Outer Banks is the little "tampon string" you see on the map when the weatherman is telling you about all the hurricanes coming out at sea :)

Above is the Avon Fishing Pier.
Fishing is one of the biggest draws of the entire area. The Outer Banks has some of the best fishing on the east coast.
Tuna, mackerel, bluefish, red drum, trout, and flounder are just a few types here.
It's a thrill to watch someone catch something right out of the raging surf. Way cool.

The always lovely - and most recognized - Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
No matter what, we always go see it several times while there.
At night at the cottage, you can always see the light from the decks.
Helluva nightlight, you know?

Everybody has to have a sticker or license plate or something with the trademark OBX on it.
It's tradition.

Only three weeks to wait.

Hope I can handle it.

Hump Day Hottie - Muy Bueno!

We cross the ocean to Spain for an import of the most beautiful kind...

Enrique Iglesias.

Can I just say scrumptious?

Each week I think I've hit the limit of really sexy guys... then I have some kind of epiphany and remember someone I'd forgotten, which in this case is this 33 year old singer - son of Julio Iglesias (in case you were born under a rock).

He came to mind after watching a guest appearance of his on a repeat of Two and a Half Men.
How random. But in a good way.

He moved to America in 1985 to live with his famous dad.

His own musical career took off in Latin circles well before it hit the mainstream in 1999 with somgs like 'Bailamos' and ''Be With You', and later hit it big with the single 'Hero' in 2001.
He holds a Billboard record for most #1 Spanish language singles on the Hot Latin Tracks chart at 19, and he's sold over 60 million records worldwide.

Come on, no one should have lashes that long. So unfair.

He also had a part in Once Upon a Time in Mexico with two other extremely mouth-watering guys - Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp. (Tell me again why I don't have that movie in my DVD collection? Note to self....)

Much to the chagrin of both sexes, he has been in a serious relationship (and rumored marriage) to tennis star/pinup Anna Kournikova for over 6 years.

I guess all these photos were taken after 2003, the year he had his trademark mole removed.
That's ok, I like him better without.

Hump Day Hottie

Not much to say except:

Sendhil Ramamurthy!!

Star of the hit TV show Heroes, which I do not watch but perhaps I should!

These good looks come from having Indian parents.

Wow.

Both of his parents and his sister are doctors.
Sendhil actually was pre-med in college but discovered acting.

Alas, single women of the world - he is married and has a daughter.

The Bullshit Express

The Bullshit Express (aka my father-in-law from Florida) made an appearance at our lovely abode this weekend and I have several things to call him on - in other words to debunk, deflate, show-up and prove wrong. Because I can. And because I'm easily annoyed, especially when it comes to him.

*Parker Posey is most certainly NOT the daughter of Charlie Chaplin.

*No, I really don't like cooked cabbage, no matter what manner of delectable, savory, enticing preparations you can do to it.

*Vanessa Carlton not only did NOT start rap music, but she can actually sing.

*Meg Ryan was not in the movie 'Michael' with John Travolta. And she did so have an affair with Russell Crowe which basically ended her marriage to Dennis Quaid.

*NASCAR is not a family sport. Guys wreck cars and die. Do you really want your small kids to watch that?

*Seabiscuit defeated War Admiral, not Man O' War. Trust me on that one. Never argue horseracing with me. Ever.

*Tom Cruise's children with Nicole Kidman were so adopted. (besides, how else can you explain his son being black?)

*Men should not wear Jovan Musk. Period.

*Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte did not write at the same time period. Bronte was born only a year before Austen's death. Try Wikipedia, ok?

*Being the grammar nazi that I am, I have to point out that the Depot in Home Depot is pronounced dee-poh - not depp-oh. Likewise, Paprika has only three syllables, not four. It is NOT pronounced pap-ah-ree-kah, ok?
And while we're on a roll here, there is no such word as ONCED. Or TWICED.

It's not that I don't love my father in law, but I'm just sayin'.

10 Random Thoughts

1) I love my mute button on my remote. I forgot how much until those stupid Comcast commercials started.

2) Men in turtlenecks creep me out.
For no reason, I have this revulsion that crawls over me when I see a man wearing a turtleneck. I do not have a clue why. If I were to see, for instance, Johnny Depp, in a turtleneck for anything other than a movie role, my image of him would be totally blown.

Okay, I may make a slight exception for something like this:

I can deal with it on Hugh, I guess. Just once.
But still, Johnny -no.

3) Michael Vick apparently thinks he's going to make $10 million a year or more in the NFL when he gets out of prison. $10 million. Prison. Remind me again why I'm not stealing televisions or evading taxes again? Oh yeah, that's right - I'm a moral, decent, law-abiding citizen.
F**K Michael Vick. I think he ought to be covered in gravy and strung up by his bits and pieces over a pen full of rabid pit bulls. Or not rabid, if it will take longer.

4) Tell me who thought it would be a good idea to schedule LOST opposite American Idol on Wednesdays at 9:00 pm? I am equally as irritated that on the same night - at the SAME TIME, Criminal Minds is on CBS. Bugger! So very rude to have all three shows on at the same time.
Also annoying is the fact that Supernatural is opposite CSI on Thursdays.
I sooooo need a DVR.

5) You know how everyone is always blubbering on and on about how they love nice sunny days? "Oooo, we need a nice sunny day! - Can't wait for a nice sunny day! - We just don't have enough nice sunny days!"
Well, how about some love for the rainy days?
Personally, I am much enamoured of rainy days. I know, I'm a depressing and dark person, the eternal introverted 'leave-me-alone' pessimist, but doesn't a rainy day go with that? I like a day when it pours that nice steady rain all day long. Nothing makes me feel more at ease than rain pattering on the rooftop. Especially when I have nowhere to go.
And yes, I prefer a thunderstorm to a heat-stroke inducing afternoon. So there.

6) You know what I said a moment ago about guys in turtlenecks? Ditto that, a hundred times over, for guys in bike shorts or speedos. No one should EVER have to be witness to that.
PUT. THAT. AWAY.

7) Tell me why I should care that Madonna fell off her horse? Thousands of people do that every day. Jockeys live and breathe tumbles from their mounts. They say her horse was spooked. Well, no sh**, Madonna is pretty scary.
I so don't give a crap about her lack of coordination. Matter of fact, the only news I want to see about Madonna is news that all radio contact was lost with the plane she was traveling in over the Bermuda Triangle. Now that I would be excited to read.
And while we're at it, am I alone in my thoughts that Madonna is one of the homliest and most unattractive people alive? Yikes.

8) What is up with these Somali pirates? In all my years I don't recall there being so much news about pirates. I mean, WTF? Tell me again, what century is this?
And how come they don't look like Capt. Jack Sparrow? Or at least Captain Morgan, right?

9) Bill Murray hit someone in the head with a golf ball during a tee shot. BWaaaahhh! I'm sorry but that's funny.

10) I saw a honeybee yesterday. I know that doesn't sound too exciting, but aren't they supposed to be far and few between? So I guess that's a good thing.
Unless the hubby gets stung, that is. We don't need any more faces swollen up like a pumpkin.

You've simply GOT to hear this.

This is Susan Boyle, a contestant on 'Britian's Got Talent', a show very similar to American Idol - complete with Simon Cowell as one of the judges.

Simon is his usual snarky self here, but he can, occassionally, be surprised.

This clip is circling the internet like a mad dingo to a baby, but if you haven't already seen it, you simply MUST click on this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luRmM1J1sfg

Seriously. Don't wait.

Hump Day Hottie: Hugh know it!

Don't know how I haven't put this guy up before now.
Holy crap.

Australian actor Hugh Jackman is all kinds of hot.
Especially here:

Now that is some serious, serious sexiness right there, folks.
Sorry to gush.

Everyone knows I like a good-looking dude on a bike:

I think I much prefer the long hair look on him:

But the short hair has its pros as well:

Striking his best brooding, Johnny Depp-esque look:

More hotness:

Golly Gee seems a stupid thing to say, but man...I'm speechless.

He was voted People mag's Sexiest Man Alive for 2008.
Fittingly, I'd say.

And he reeks talent, as well as looks.

He is a star of stage, theater, film, and tv - and hosted the Oscars this year.

He's won a Tony and an Emmy, among his many other accolades.

Currently he is starring in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Alas, he has been married for over twelve years.
Oh well. So have I...longer even.

He gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this year.
